About 3-Day Rjúkandi and Sænautasel Route from Austurland

Set in the high plateaus and rugged geography of the Norðurland region, the Dritfell and Surroundings History Tour is a unique three-day experience that opens a romantic window into Iceland's fascinating past. This incredible route brings together ancient settlements and natural monuments that tell the story of how Icelanders survived in harsh natural conditions, offering an adventurous atmosphere specifically designed for couples. On your very first day, you will step into history at the foothills of the majestic Dritfell mountain and explore the Helluhraunsöxl area, which bears the profound traces of ancient volcanic terrains. After viewing the powerfully flowing Rjúkandi waterfall, you will peacefully end the day by the calm waters of lake Sænautavatn. The second day features a visit to the historic Sænautasel turf farm, widely considered the heart of this tour. This completely isolated settlement, which also inspired classic Icelandic literature, is a perfect example for understanding the incredibly tough highland life. Afterwards, you will spend time at the legendary giant rock formation of Skessugarður and the ancient point of Stóra-Svalbarð. On the third and final day of the tour, you will cross the silent valleys of the Gripdeild area and hike along the serene shores of the Ánavatn and Hnjúksvatn lakes, thoroughly enjoying being alone in Iceland's wild nature. Regarding essential practical information: Because this route includes mountain roads and remote high plateaus, it is accessible exclusively during the summer season. In winter, these highland roads are completely closed with thick layers of snow, making travel utterly impossible. Since the weather can change suddenly even during the summer months, you must definitely choose a high-clearance 4x4 vehicle when renting a car before starting the route. Do not forget to bring plenty of drinking water, snacks, thick windproof clothing, and a reliable map.
