About 3-Day Skálafell and Grænavatn Route from Suðurland

This three-day solo gastronomy tour, where you discover Iceland's hidden culinary culture and authentic local flavors while experiencing the country's striking nature all by yourself, will satisfy both your soul and your palate. Stretching from the green valleys of Suðurland to the desolate mountainous areas of Hálendið, this unique route offers you the absolute best chance to taste regional dishes accompanied by Iceland's pristine nature. As a critical warning, since a large part of the route passes through the Hálendið region and challenging F-roads, you must strictly plan this journey only during the summer season. In winter months, these mountainous areas are completely closed to transportation. During your trip, daily driving times are kept to a maximum of four hours to prevent fatigue, and it is highly recommended to have windproof clothing with you. The first day of your adventure begins with the relaxing view of the beautiful Faxi waterfall. At the local facilities around the waterfall, you can taste unique delicacies prepared with fresh Icelandic salmon and regional herbs. Afterward, you will glide through the foothills of the Grænifjallgarður mountains to reach the emerald green waters of Grænavatn. On your second day, your route descends deeper into the wilderness. Following your nature walks around Stóra Fossvatn and Litlisjór, you will take a break on the shores of Langavatn. In the late afternoon, against the stunning landscapes of Skálafell and Ónýtavatn, you can enjoy traditional dried Icelandic fish and regional snacks. The third day focuses on Ónýtafell and its surroundings with its highly dramatic landscapes. While wandering the fascinating volcanic slopes of Snjóölduvatn and Snjóalda, you will understand how local ingredients grown in volcanic soil inspire Icelandic cuisine. You will end your tour with the memory of a peaceful dinner spent alone with nature at the calm waters of Sandvatn. This magnificent geography of Iceland offers an invaluable exploration opportunity for solo traveling foodies.
