About 2-Day Þakgil and Sker Route from Suðurland

Hidden in the shadow of majestic glaciers in southern Iceland, Þakgil is a unique getaway where you can descend into the heart of nature with your family. This two-day adventure invites you to a completely unspoiled geography, far away from Iceland's classic and crowded tourist routes. The wind echoing between the emerald green walls of the Þakgil canyon provides an atmosphere that is both peaceful and full of discovery for your entire family. On the very first day of our tour, we start from the Þakgil valley, which draws attention with its steep slopes, and hike towards the Sker area. Along the way, the breathtaking views of the Jökulshöfuð glacier peak promise fascinating frames for photography enthusiasts. On the second day, our route takes on a slightly calmer atmosphere; we take a pleasant walk around the picturesque Gæsavatn lake hidden among the rugged mountains. Then, passing under the shadow of the imposing Kistufell hill, we end our route with wonderful natural landscapes at the Valaþúfa point. Please remember, the dirt roads reaching the Þakgil region are generally only open during the summer season and are impassable during the winter months due to severe weather conditions and heavy snow. Therefore, when planning this route, you must explicitly schedule your trip during the summer months. Renting a high-clearance, four-wheel drive (4x4) vehicle is absolutely critical for your safety during transportation. The rugged terrain of the region makes it mandatory to wear waterproof, durable trekking boots suitable for long hikes. Against the highly unpredictable nature of Icelandic weather, you should always keep your windbreakers and raincoats ready in your backpack. Although the daily driving times are relatively short, your speed will be very low due to the rough mountain roads. Do not forget to take plenty of water, energy-giving snacks, and spare clothes with you on the hikes you will do with your family.
