Hike among colorful volcanic mountains, the deep blue Djúpavatn crater lake, and steamy hot springs. Get ready to be lost in Reykjanes’ unique, wild nature.
The Reykjanes Peninsula, bubbling with Iceland's immense geothermal energy, is essentially an open-air geology laboratory for passionate nature enthusiasts. This two-day nature tour, covering the volcanic systems around Grænadyngja, appeals to adventure seekers who desperately want to escape the crowds and fully integrate with a wild, remarkably colorful geography. The green and red hues created by extinct lava flows, towering tuff cones, and mineral-rich soils form the most prominent landscape features of this rugged route. As we begin the first day, we march with firm steps along the striking route of the volcanic hills Grænadyngja and Trölladyngja. As you approach the rocky summits, the smoke rising around you and the warm earth beneath your feet will instantly make you feel the living breath of the planet. Towards the end of the day, we pass by Lake Spákonuvatn, which fascinates with its eerie calmness, and enjoy the profound silence of nature. The second day is entirely dedicated to Iceland's impressive and dramatic crater lakes. Djúpavatn, famous for its deep and mysterious waters, shines like a surprise jewel right in the middle of steep cliffs. Immediately afterwards, we will visit Grænavatn, which naturally takes its name from the strange and eye-catching green color of its vibrant waters; the riot of colors here offers extraordinary opportunities for landscape photography. We close our grand tour on the rugged and somewhat challenging hiking trails in the majestic Traðarfjöll mountainous terrain. The mountain roads providing access to the region are extremely rocky, rough, and fully gravel. Since these highland roads are often closed and become quite dangerous during the winter months, we strongly recommend that you strictly travel this route during the summer season. A well-equipped, high-clearance four-wheel drive (4x4) vehicle will undoubtedly be your biggest savior.
